Hands down, Guerlain’s new Orchidee Imperiale Cream has to win the prize for the most gorgeous packaging. The jewel-like gold and navy glass jar comes nestled in a sleek blue box (pretty in its own right). At $410, it’s not the most expensive cream I’ve ever tried—that would be La Prairie with its Cellular Cream Platinum Rare at a whopping $1,000 a pop—but it’s the first to use orchids as part of an anti-aging product.
At Guerlain’s Orchidarium (who knew such things existed?), scientists worked for 10 years to identify three orchids out of the 30,000 varieties (who knew there were that many?) that had potential for anti-aging properties. They discovered that at the heart of these orchids’ growth tissue was the ability to slow down the cells’ aging process. Hey, if it works for orchids, it must work for humans too, right? The company claims that Guerlain’s Orchidee Imperiale Cream “targets the mechanisms that lead to the end of cell activity, slowing down the number of cells entering senescence and maintaining the number of young and active cells,” and that you’ll see smoother, more radiant skin after eight weeks of use. Too soon to tell about that, but the cream glides on like silk, smells divine, and looks really classy on my bathroom vanity. If it slows down my skin’s aging process, that’s just icing on the cake. Available at Neiman Marcus at the Westchester.
