A founding editor of MORE magazine, for which she was the beauty and fashion director from 1997 to 2008, Lois Joy Johnson has lived in the county for the past 25 years. Her most recent book is The Wardrobe Wakeup: Your Guide to Looking Fabulous at Any Age. Here we chat with her about ways to stay current.
What’s the biggest mistake you see women over forty making? Trying to look too young and not giving enough thought to if this works for the body and lifestyle they have now. I don’t want to see skin that’s crepe-y and too much cleavage and super low jeans on people who have fleshy middles. There are so many ways to show your body without showing your skin.
Like what, specifically? Skinny jeans with a fitted top or a jersey wrap dress. You don’t have to wear teeny little leather shorts to look modern and contemporary.
Do you have a favorite Westchester boutique? Not really—I actually spend more time at my tailor, Dominic Gangemi. I tailor everything, from tee shirts, to jeans, to raincoats.
So where do you shop locally? I love Lord & Taylor for dresses as well as their incredible shoe department. And I spend a lot of time cruising around J.Crew in The Westchester for easy pick-ups.
What’s your best tip for looking stylish at any age? Wearing nude heels that are the same color as your foundation and a neckline that hits mid-chest so you’re stretching your body at both ends—elongating your neck and your legs. You’ll look taller, slimmer, and sexier—and whatever’s going on in the middle won’t matter.
