Everything You Need to Know About Westchester's Dining Scene This Month

This month’s latest openings, closing, announcements, and celebrations in the foodie community.

Alongside the traditional fare, such as souvlaki, stuffed peppers, and mousakka, Niko’s Greek Taverna (287 Central Ave, White Plains; 914.686.6456) executive chef Mike Bianco added a pizza menu in early October. The 10-inch offerings are based on the crust style (three-quarters-to-an-inch thick, crusty bottom, cheese along the edges) owner George Kringas ate as a child growing up in Sparta, Greece. Among the options: a spanakopita pie, the vegan Yia Yia (tomato, shallots, no cheese), and the Ohana with pineapple, pickled greens, smoked ham, bacon, mozzarella, and basil.

There are approximately 20 vendors, including Baked by Susan, The Dessertist, Monteverde, Lefteris Gyro, Turco’s, Mt Kisco Smokehouse, Croton Colonial Diner, and Little Sorrento.

Chef Bonnie Saran is continuing her annual tradition of opening her restaurants on Thanksgiving from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for complimentary holiday meals (this year it’s Little Drunken Chef in White Plains). “When I first moved here, I was totally alone,” says Saran, who welcomes anyone looking for some Thanksgiving Day company, “so I understand how the holidays can be a very depressing time for some, even while it’s happy for others.”

Ramen and other Asian street foods will be the focus at counter-service Fatt Root (11 Wheeler Ave, Pleasantville), expected to debut by year’s end in the space that formerly held Pony Express. Chef Mogan Anthony and Executive Chef William Eschner, whose most recent opening was Locali in Mount Kisco, are at the helm.

In place of a shuttered ACME Markets, DeCicco & Sons is opening its ninth location in Scarsdale (777 White Plains Rd), in the summer of 2020. An extensive retail beer selection and in-store pub are part of the plans.
