At least 15 percent of Westchester’s population is over 65 years old, and many county residents have aging parents. Anthony J. Enea, managing partner of White Plains law firm Enea, Scanlan & Sirignano, LLP, is the newly elected chair of the Elder Law Section of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA). A one-year term, this position involves overseeing the activities of about 2,800 member lawyers who practice in areas of elder law such as estate planning, wills and trusts, and Medicaid and Medicare advocacy.
Ken Theobalds, vice president of government and regulatory affairs for Entergy Nuclear, was recently appointed to the executive committee of The Business Council of Westchester (BCW), making him the 18th member of the committee. Theobalds, a New Rochelle resident who holds a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University, is a graduate of the Entergy Executive Program. Pressure from concerned citizens and legislators to close Indian Point and develop alternative energy sources has been ongoing, and legislators are balancing out the economic impact of shutting down the facility with public concerns about safety.
New Businesses, Relocations, and Operations
A fourth Danny’s Cycles has opened, this one in Larchmont. The family-owned and -operated bicycle store is run by Steve Kahn, who has worked at Danny’s Cycles since age 13. “We have been serving the market for forty-five years,” says Kahn. “And we are strategic in how we expand.” Kahn targets communities with families who have young children.
Medical professionals are looking for new ways to expand their practices in Westchester. Psychiatrist Tara Brass, MD, is launching the FitMD program in Scarsdale, combining psychological counseling, nutritional coaching, and personal training. “With one professional organizing and supervising all of those aspects, clients have a greater likelihood of making changes that are lifelong.” Dr. Brass can be reached at tarayonit@aol.com. 
Two Chappaqua mothers who enjoy closet-cleaning and styling have decided to turn their passion into a profession. StyleCycle (stylecycle.com), a personalized styling service and closet cleaning/organizing company, was just launched by two Chappaqua mothers, Susan Goodman and Lisa Ballou. In their first month, they got 12 clients, including business professionals who want to cut down the time they spend dressing in the morning. StyleCycle also takes unwanted items to consignment, which means clients not only have fewer decisions to make in the mornings when they get dressed, they also have a few extra dollars in their wallets.
ArtsWestchester (31 Mamaroneck Ave, White Plains), the largest private nonprofit arts council in New York State, recently renovated its ninth-floor penthouse to create a new art gallery and rehearsal space. The gallery was unveiled at this month’s ArtsBash event, which included a display of the work of seven local sculptors. The construction cost about $1 million.

From golf bags to swag bags, two Westchester women are finding ways to profit.
Business in Westchester often gets done on the golf course, and New Rochelle resident Sherry Bruck, president of Harquin Creative Group, was determined to earn a place in “the boys’ club.” She took golf lessons and worked on improving her game. The Executive Women Golfer’s Association (EWGA) just bestowed a “Women Who Lead” award on Bruck, one of 10 honorees,for excellence in volunteer leadership at EWGA’s national conference. Bruck encourages other women to “gain the confidence they need to play in the many outings hosted throughout the Westchester business community.” Bruck began golfing in 1985 and “learned to love competing.”

Jane Ubell-Meyer, a Pleasantville resident who founded Madison & Mulholland, a “swag bag” company, in 2002, is now offering 25 of her coveted Hampton gift bags to one lucky Westchester retailer or business in 2012. Named “The Best of the Best” by Dan’s Papers, which covers North and South Forks, long Island, Ubell’s bags are filled with $200 worth of beach reads and giveaways (including reading glasses). She started the business from her home office and now has investors and is seeking warehouse space in Westchester. Ubell has created the program, whereby the retailer or business becomes a “pick-up” spot for consumers. The venue gets increased traffic and the sponsor receives contact information for the bag recipients, which it can use for future marketing efforts. The Katonah Museum of Art (KMA) received a 2012 American Inhouse Design Award for its 2010-2011 Annual Report from Graphic Design USA. The Awards are the largest showcase for outstanding work for in-house designers. The KMA Annual Report can be viewed on the museum’s website www.katonahmuseum.org.
