Enjoy an End-of-Summer Respite at The Menhaden in Greenport

Take a drive to the North Fork and book a room at this tranquil property. We promise you won’t be disappointed.

While the Hamptons gets all the attention, the North Fork, in our opinion, is a better bet. Less glitzy, less crowded (though still buzzing), and slightly less expensive, the area offers similar charm: walkable towns full of Insta-worthy eateries and boutiques, water views galore, a relaxed, beachy atmosphere, and a plethora of nearby vineyards.

The historic coastal town of Greenport is perhaps the cutest of the North Fork villages, and there is nowhere better to stay than The Menhaden, a newly opened boutique property smack in the middle of town, owned and developed by a lovely, low-key Dobbs Ferry couple.

“We can’t think of a better place to enjoy a bottle of rosé at sundown than this relaxing space, with two firepits, a bar, and killer views of Greenport Harbor and Shelter Island.”

From the moment you approach The Menhaden’s distinctive building, you sense the tranquil vibe within. The cohesive black-and-white color palette running throughout the hotel lends a delightfully modern twist on beach décor. The look is bright and clean, with unexpected details, like hand-painted botanical murals courtesy of local artist Kara Hoblin, and nautical touches that include historic artifacts (bricks, horseshoes, a local whaling-ship mast, etc.) unearthed during construction.

The 16-room property, in walking distance to everything in town, boasts Greenport’s only rooftop lounge. We can’t think of a better place to enjoy a bottle of rosé at sundown than this relaxing space, with two firepits, a bar, and killer views of Greenport Harbor and Shelter Island. There’s also a cozy lobby café, perfect for morning coffee or afternoon break, offering fresh-squeezed juices, cold-brew and tea on tap, and a selection of salads and sandwiches.

The Menhaden’s super-stylish restaurant, The Merchant’s Wife, serves casual small plates and signature cocktails. Ensconce yourself in one of the two long banquettes for lounge-style dining or opt for a marble tabletop for a more formal setting.

Where to Eat in Greenport

Bruce & Son

For a small village, Greenport packs a lot of foodie punch. We recommend:

Inspired brunch items like lemon-ricotta pancakes and cast-iron crustless quiches at Bruce & Son (208 Main St; www.bruceandsongreenport.com); Baja-style Mexican fare (plus 50 different kinds of tequila) at the fun, kitschy Lucharitos Tacqueria & Tequila Bar (119 Main St; www.lucharitos.com); oysters galore and a daily rotating menu of sophisticated seafood at The Frisky Oyster (27 Front St; www.thefriskyoyster.com); anything on the brunch, dinner, or dessert menus (emphasis on farm-fresh ingredients) served on the tree-shaded patio at American Beech (300 Main St; www.americanbeech.com).

You’ll sleep soundly in any of the ethereal rooms at The Menhaden, decorated purposefully in neutral tones with natural accents of wood and greenery. Abstract images by local photographer Scott Farrell lend a dreamy feel to the walls, while the airy spa-style bathrooms are stocked with bath amenities by Roam, a female-owned line of vegan, gluten-free, American-made products. In the morning, with your robe still on, slip out to the galley kitchen (one on each floor) to grab yummy complimentary beverages and snacks before starting your day.
