Eating Al Fresco in Westchester

Food for Thought

Spring begins today, and while the forecasted sunny-and-54°F is not shorts-wearing weather, we’ll take it. Not sure why Mother Nature was especially bitchy this past winter, but we made it through cooking in, ordering in, and binge-viewing on overworked DVRs.

Channeling my inner Joe Rao, I’m predicting (nervously hoping) there’s going to come a day before the end of March that, while shy about 10 degrees for wearing shorts, will be warm enough for dining al fresco. It might be just one day—the following back down to 30°F (March is prickly like that)—but it’s coming. While there are many outdoor options in the county, from sidewalk dining in hardworking White Plains to verdant-patio feasting at Bedford Post, Hudson-side chowdowns—MP Taverna and Chutney Masala Indian in Irvington;  Dolphin in Yonkers; RiverMarket Bar & Kitchen in Tarrytown, to name a few—are among my favorites. Just remember to call ahead to see if they’ve set up their outdoor dining yet. Remember: food tastes much better when gazing upon the Hudson’s contemplative waves.

And if you can’t make it to the aforementioned Hudson Riverside restaurants anytime soon, an opportune way to sample fare from each is to look for their respective tables at the Grand Tastings event at this magazine’s Wine & Food Week, June 3 to 8 (
