The children of the owners of the defunct Yvonne’s Southern Cuisine in Pelham have opened a new restaurant in Mount Vernon called House of Soul. Though the menu has undergone a few changes, House of Soul still serves the same authentic Southern comfort food that Yvonne’s was known for.
The restaurant says that, while its signature dish is fried chicken, the fried catfish quickly has become a customer favorite as well, rivaling the chicken’s popularity. Entrées, which range from $10.95 to $23.95, also include smothered pork chops, oxtails, spare ribs, spicy jerk chicken and, for the more adventurous, pig’s feet, or “trotters.” Chitterlings (“chitlins”), a Southern delicacy of slowly simmered pig intestines, are also available.
All the favorite Southern sides are on hand, such as black-eyed peas, macaroni and cheese, candied yams, and collard greens. For dessert, don’t miss the peach cobbler, sweet potato pie, and homemade cakes of the day.
“Grab ‘n’ go” lunch specials, all under $10, are served Tuesday to Friday. House of Soul offers a buffet dinner on Thursdays beginning at 3 pm, and brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 am to 3 pm. Live entertainment including blues and jazz is on the calendar every Saturday night.
On-street parking can be tricky to find, but parking is available in the Rite Aid lot next door and in the municipal lot across the street.
The restaurant plans to have its liquor license by mid-February, in time for Valentine’s Day.
House of Soul is open Tuesday and Wednesday, 7 am to 9 pm; Thursday 7 am to 10 pm and Friday, 7 am to 11 pm; Saturday, 8 am to 11 pm; and Sunday, 8 am to 7 pm.
