Matt Dobyns of Fresh Meadow CC ran away from the field Wednesday to grab the Metropolitan Professional Championship at Fairview CC. His final round 68 featured four birdies and an eagle to give him a three-day total of 206, five shots better than second-place finisher David Young of Sleepy Hollow who ended with a 211. Young’s son, Cameron, competed this week in the PGA Junior Championship at Miramont CC in Texas, where he finished sixth.
Dobyns adds the Met PGA title to the PGA National Championship he won earlier this year at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.
Century CC’s Frank Bensel and GlenArbor’s Rob Labritz, both champs in previous years, tied for third with 212 each. Grant Sturgeon of Winged Foot, Charlie Meola of Saxon Woods, and James Ondo of Apawamis were T5 at 215. Ondo piled up five birdies in a row on hole 11 through 15 in his final round. Kirk Satterfield of the Golf Club of Purchase held down the 8th spot with an even par 216.
The top eleven players qualify for spots in the 2016 PGA Professional National Championship to be held at Atunyote GC at the Turning Stone Resort in Verona, NY.
