It’s a topic that’s certainly up for debate, but you won’t find many who disagree that the bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich is the ultimate breakfast food, and in Westchester, we’re loaded with places to snag one. But what if you want something more substantial? Extreme variations are out there, like at Anthony’s in Mamaroneck, but I discovered another one a while ago in Yorktown Heights, and finally got around to eating it—or trying to.
At the site for the former Dante’s III, Heavy Bear now exists under new ownership. We’ve already covered their signature Wacky, specifically the Super Wacky, but each time I went I always noticed a sign apart from their regular menu that read: “The Super Bombero, 2 ½ lbs. of bliss, try it if you dare.” I like dares.
On a friend’s moving day and with plenty of heavy furniture lifting ahead, our three-man crew decided we needed the protein and carbs, so we ordered up three Bomberos. At $9.50 per, each one basically suffices as two full meals, unless you’re a true beast, or planning to sleep for the rest of the day after consumption.
With The Bombero, you’re in for six eggs, bacon, sausage patties, ham, sliced steak, home fries, Jack cheese, and pickled jalapeños on a wedge. When you unwrap the deli paper and see the gooey cheese oozing out the sides, your mouth will water, and then you’ll wonder, “How the hell do I eat this thing?” Just unhinge your jaw, and dive in. It’s a salty explosion of greasy pork, starchy potatoes, layers of egg and melted cheese, and a kick of spice from the peppers for a morning wake-up call.
The Super Bombero is freakishly big, and the calorie count has to be astronomical, but it’s actually quite good, and probably a terrific hangover cure. Ringing true to its menu verbiage, it is bliss, but do YOU dare?
