Few gifts say romance as well as jewelry—whether it’s a dainty bracelet, an elegant string of pearls, a spectacular bauble, or a sparkling diamond. But knowing when and what to buy can mean the difference between a fabulous gift and an embarrassing faux pas. Whether you want to show her you really like her or that you want to spend the rest of your life with her—or him—there’s a piece of jewelry that’s just right. We asked jeweler Robert Woodrow, co-owner of R&M Woodrow Jewelry in Rye, for some advice about choosing the perfect piece.
What’s the best advice you have for a man who’s considering giving a piece of jewelry for the first time to the woman he’s dating?
A safe tip for a man early in a relationship is to never present a box that looks like it contains a ring. It can be a disappointment!
What would you suggest as a first gift of jewelry?
Something more subtle. A sterling-silver necklace or earrings by Links of London would be a nice choice.
Are there any hot trends in bracelets and necklaces at the moment?
Diamonds By the Yard (bezel-set diamonds on a thin chain) have been quite popular and are very wearable.
Which metals are most popular—yellow gold, white gold, platinum, silver?
All are very current. In the past few years, rose gold has reemerged.
What kinds of engagement rings are currently trending?
Pavé diamond halo engagement rings have become quite popular. They present a center stone well and give the ring some oomph. They have multiple facets, and the design makes the ring appear more substantial.
In terms of cut, what are the most and least popular diamond engagement rings?
Traditional round brilliant diamonds are still the most popular choice. We have not sold a marquis in quite some time.
What are the best options for jewelry gifts from a woman to a man?
Watches, pens, knives, cufflinks, and money clips are a few good choices.
Any new romantic jewelry trends on the horizon?
