Designer Marc Jacobs Buys Rye’s $9.2 Million Frank Lloyd Wright Home

This waterfront Westchester property by one famed designer will now welcome another.

Everyone say hello to Westchester’s newest resident — at least on weekends — Marc Jacobs. The famed fashion designer just dropped a whopping $9,175,000 on a weekend home in Rye, and if you think that price tag seems a little steep even by Westchester standards, just wait.

Located at 58 Island Drive sits on the northernmost tip of Manursing Island, with gorgeous views of the sound shore and just a stone’s throw from Playland. The Max Hoffman House as it’s known — you know a house is important when it has it’s own name — was first built in 1955 for Maximillian Edwin Hoffman, an Austrian-born importer of European cars often credited with introducing and really selling American buyers on brands like Alfa Romeo and BMW.

Hoffman had commissioned famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright to design a showroom for his Park Avenue Jaguar dealership the previous year, and in 1955 moved into the newly constructed, Mid-century modern. Hoffman continued to live in the home and had the additional North Wing added in 1972.

The home was then owned by Whitney trustee Emily Fisher Landau until 1993, and most recently Tom and Alice Tisch (son and daughter-in-law of former CBS presicent/CEO Laurence Tisch) who renovated the interior of the home in 1995 under the direction of architect Emanuela Frattini Magnusson. And now, Jacobs.

The six-bed, five-bath features breathtaking shore views from nearly every window. The one-level also sports typical Wrightian stonework with copper trim, an in-ground swimming pool, and a more recently added Japanese-style garden designed by the curator of the John P. Humes Japanese Stroll Garden. The two-acre property was sold by the Tisches via Joshua Wesoky of Compass, while Jacobs was represented by Laura DeVita of Julia B Fee Sotheby’s International Realty.
