The Westchester Library System is now offering an online version of the popular “Demystifying Medicare” workshops to provide people with important information while in-person sessions are unavailable.
The workshop, run by Westchester Seniors Out Speaking (WCOS), is designed to educate people on how Medicare works so that those making health insurance decisions have a full understanding of the system before making any potentially life-changing decisions. It’s targeted specifically for people already enrolled in Medicare, those who will soon be eligible for Medicare, and those that are helping relatives or friends with their medical decisions, and even offers trained volunteers to help with residents’ specific billing and policy questions.
The online version of the program is interactive and includes both audio chapters and downloadable handouts so users can listen and learn at their own pace. Topics covered in the workshop include Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage Plans, prescription drug plans, “Medigap” supplemental plans, New York’s EPIC (Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage) program, and cost-saving options for those with limited resources.
Westchester Seniors Out Speaking usually runs Demystifying Medicare and other Medicare-related programs when libraries and community centers are open but have been forced to cancel or postpone all of the group’s in-person dates through at least the beginning of September due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.
