Davis Love III Notches Another Win In Westchester

The Met Golf Writers will honor the U.S. Ryder Cup Captain at July dinner.

Davis Love III will be looking at the Gold Tee at the end of the rainbow when he returns to Westchester on Monday, July 25, to receive the coveted award from the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association.  The 21-time PGA Tour winner will be honored at the group’s 65th National Awards Dinner to be held at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown.

“Davis stands for all that is good in golf,” says MGWA President Bruce Beck. “He is a true sportsman, a leader, a family man, and the perfect recipient of our prestigious Gold Tee Award.”

Love, 51, won the 1997 PGA Championship in Westchester when he defeated Justin Leonard at Winged Foot GC in Mamaroneck. The win was made additionally memorable by a rainbow that appeared as Love wrapped up his victory on the 72nd hole.

Later the week of the award banquet, Love will look to repeat his win when he contends in the 100th anniversary edition of the PGA Championship at Baltusrol in New Jersey.  He will also captain the U.S. Ryder Cup team this year at Hazeltine. Love also won the Players Championship in 1992 and 2003. He was runner-up in two Masters (1995, 1999) and tied for second in the 1996 U.S. Open. When Love broke a seven-year drought at the 2015 Wyndham Championship last year, he became only the seventh golfer over age 50 to win a PGA TOUR event.

Love joins select company as a Gold Tee honoree. The award’s past recipients include the biggest names in golf: Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Nancy Lopez, Tom Watson, Annika Sorenstam, Phil Mickelson, and last year’s winner, Nick Price.
