David Rockefeller, the last surviving grandson of Standard Oil Company founder John D. Rockefeller, Sr., died Monday morning at the family estate in Pocantico Hills. Rockefeller was 101, the oldest living member of the family, at his passing. He was the last son of philanthropist and financier John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and was the family patriarch since 2004.
Rockefeller, also a philanthropist and banker, served as chief executive and chairman of Chase Manhattan Bank, which for years has also been known as Rockefeller Bank despite the small percent of its shares the family owned.
Rockefeller and his wife, Margaret “Peggy” McGrath, who died in 1996, had six children together. Five of the six children survive Rockefeller: David Rockefeller Jr., Abigail Aldrich “Abby” Rockefeller, Neva Rockefeller, Margaret Dulany “Peggy” Rockefeller, and Eileen Rockefeller. Richard Gilder Rockefeller was killed in June 2014 when his single-engine place crashed near the Westchester Country Airport in White Plains.
Rockefeller’s cause of death has not yet been released.
