Looking to fill a market with nooks and crannies, Denise and Ross Weale of Croton-on-Hudson created Dam Good English Muffins, which Denise describes as “being a cross between a bagel and a traditional English muffin.” The name plays off both their hometown’s Croton Dam — as well as their quality.
The idea for the English muffins came to the Weales after tasting a friend’s English muffins at a party. The Weales, graduates of Johnson & Wales Culinary School, had gotten out of the culinary field, but the muffins re-ignited their passion for cooking and led them to baking. “We stumbled onto something that nobody else around here was doing professionally,” Denise says. The muffins are made without any preservatives and she notes they strike a chord with consumers who are “searching for products with ingredients they can pronounce and with buying locally.”
At the end of 2016 the Weales began giving samples of the English muffins to friends and family and getting feedback. In January 2017 they officially launched the business by selling to stores in Northern Westchester, and then branching out to farmers’ markets. “People love the uniqueness of the product — because they’re homemade they come in all different shapes and sizes,” says Denise.

The muffins have a crunchy outside and a chewy inside and come in three varieties:white, honey wheat, and cinnamon swirl. They also make vegan muffins that can be found at Good Choice Kitchen in Ossining. The Weales are looking to expand into Southern Westchester and would love their muffins to appear on restaurant menus. “Because of their size the muffins are equally good for breakfast or with a burger at dinner,” Denise says.
