From Big House to (Potential) Beer House: Yonkers City Jail up for sale
Yonkers City Jail is getting rehabilitated. The city is putting the historic cell blocks on the proverbial auction block so an experienced redeveloper can “acquire, preserve, restore, adaptively reuse, and redevelop” the two-story brick building, which covers more than 10,000 square feet, according to the city’s request for proposal. The jail, which opened in 1928, is included in the Yonkers’ Alexander Street master plan, which calls for the replacement of blocks of warehouses, small factories, and bus yards with a high-density residential neighborhood that includes a mix of retail stores and restaurants, public parks and open space, and commercial offices. The buildings to be replaced are beside the Metro-North Railroad tracks. Planners said the city also supported other potential uses such as conversion to a brewery or microbrewery and retail shops.
