Diana Scott-Sho, founder and owner of The Luscious Little Dessert Company, has been churning out pies, cookies, and cheesecakes since opening in 2010. But the focal point of her business, which is based in Westchester and serves the county, lies in the mother of all Southern comfort desserts: pound cake. “There is something primal, something comforting about a good pound cake,” says Scott-Sho. “As a child, there was always pound cake in our house. It was the cake you shared with family, friends, and strangers.”
The most popular pound cake that Scott-Sho sells is the sweet potato pound cake with a brown sugar glaze. The scrumptious cake follows her great-grandmother’s original recipe, which Scott-Sho credits as her inspiration. “My baking skills come from my great-grandmother, Big Ma. I spent every free minute in her kitchen, watching, learning, listening to her stories.” In addition to the sweet potato pound cake, other delectable flavors include triple chocolate, banana, and classic country. Throughout the year, Scott-Sho can produce anywhere from 80 to 160 pound cakes per week.

For those who need pound cake all year long, The Luscious Little Dessert Company has a By The Pound membership-only pound cake club, where you can receive a different, seasonal flavor for every month of the year. The upcoming January flavor of the month is rum raisin, with chocolate raspberry following for February. You can purchase a subscription for three, six, nine, or twelve months on the business’ website, www.lusciouslittledesserts.com.
In 2017, be on the lookout for new pound cake flavors from Scott-Sho, including Meyer lemon and caramel. And if you want to try to your hand at baking a pound cake, Scott Sho advises, “Take the time to cream the butter and sugar, and add the eggs one at a time. Be patient because a good pound cake is a glorious thing.”
Baked goods from The Luscious Little Dessert Company can be purchased online, or at the New Rochelle Farmers’ Market from June to November.
