Are You Ready For Cold Weather Golf in Westchester?

There’s no reason to stop playing just because there’s a chill in the air! The right gear can make you an all-season golfer.

Winter golf often means a trip to Florida, but if you’re forgoing travel this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s no need to put your clubs away on Halloween. Westchester County’s six public courses are typically open through December 31. Pound Ridge GC and other daily fee courses are open as long as weather permits and many of the private clubs allow members access to their courses year-round. So winterize your game and get out there and play!

When it comes to outerwear, you want layers for warmth and fit for flexibility. For players who want maximum swing clearance, a vest is the answer. Sun Mountain’s Colter Vest features insulated panels for core warmth and side panels with 4-way stretch for easy range of motion. The insulated panels use 37.5® insulation which is known for its ability to actively regulate body temperature and resist moisture. A full-sleeved jacket version is available as well.

You may not be headed for Scotland, but you’ll need protection against wet weather in Westchester, too. Galway Bay rainwear features proprietary Hydro-Flex 32 fabric that’s breathable but still blocks wind and rain. It’s strong and durable, without any “bulk.” Offered in several color options, the jacket features a soft, quiet fabric, as well as rubberized waterproof zippers. A high collar in the back tapers down and is rounded in the front. You can get matching pants, too.

The best way to stay warm on the course is to walk it. While carrying your bag is always an option, you may want to invest in a pull/push cart (or trolley, as they are known across the Atlantic) to save your back. You don’t need a truck to haul your cart around, either, when it folds to a depth of less than five inches in three simple movements like the Blade IP from Big Max. With a five-year manufacturer warranty, the Blade IP is a solid value.

And walking golfers simply must take care of their feet. Check out True Linkswear’s new Knit II golf shoe. It features a handful of notable upgrades including a full sock-fit liner, Wanderlux super-foam outsole, and revitalized lace box. The uppers are breathable but water repellent for those damp morning rounds and the cross-life tread will minimize foot slips during your swing.
