Beam’s Bright Light by Katherine Alexis

Katherine Alexis is a first-time children’s book author with a background in childhood education that enriches her debut publication. Alexis grew up in the enchanting town of Sleep Hollow, where stories have historically been brought to life, and Beam’s Bright Light is no exception. After earning her degree in early childhood inclusive education and special education from Syracuse University, Alexis pursued her master’s in social work at the University of Southern California.

The character Beam shines across the pages of this illustrated story, which is colored with clever metaphors to display themes of acceptance and diversity. The story follows Beam on her first day of school as she meets a slew of characters with their own induvial strengths. The heartwarming tale touches on the idea that everyone has their own “light,” or unique qualities, and that working together can create a brighter and more supportive community. Ideal for a sweet and motivating read around back-to-school season, this children’s book was illustrated by Katie Brobst and edited by Sara Rennert.

The Imposter and Emily Snook, the World’s Smallest Cook by Laura Bower

Local author Laura Bower has two books coming out this year: The Imposter, illustrated by Kerisa Greene, and Emily Snook, the World’s Smallest Cook, illustrated by Rekha Salin. Both children’s books combine humor and heart and are inspired by the author’s three kids, making them perfect reads for back-to-school season. Bower is a pre-school teacher who didn’t discover her passion for children’s literature until she left her public relations job to stay home with her children. Prior to fully immersing herself in her writing journey, she graduated from the University of Richmond with a degree in leadership and communications and worked in Manhattan for over 10 years.

Waiting for Lumpy by Leslie Kimmelman

Having spent over 24 years on Sesame Street as the senior editor, as well as an editor and writer, for Sesame Street Magazine, Leslie Kimmelman’s passion for children and literature runs deep. It was during an alumni career day at her New England college that she had her “aha!” moment and decided to pursue a career revolving around books. After graduation, she moved to New York City to begin her publishing career and, in 1989, her debut book, Frannie’s Fruits, was published. While the Ardsley resident has over 15 noteworthy publications, her recent release is a perfect pick for young ones entering the school system for the first time.

Waiting for Lumpy is about a family who has a baby on the way. Everyone is excited, except for little Ella. Ella is currently the baby of the family and can’t wrap her head around why the family would need another baby. When Ella and her brother are brainstorming names for their newest sibling, her recommendations are Squirt and Lumpy. The story follows Ella’s path to acceptance and becoming the best big sister.
