Zwilling J.A. Henckels Opens US HQ In Pleasantville

Sharp knives, sleek design, solar power, and serious cooking skills were on display at the company’s recent grand opening celebration.

When is a new office building not just an office? When it’s also a cooking studio, a logistics hub, and an innovative solar project. Such is the case for the new US headquarters of Zwilling J.A. Henckels, which debuted last week. Renowned around the globe for its high-end cutlery, cookware, flatware, and glassware—and revered locally for its famous annual warehouse sale, which kicks off this year on November 20—Zwilling J.A. Henckels recently celebrated the grand opening of its new US headquarters in a state-of-the-art building in Pleasantville. The 280-year-old German brand moved into its new 122,000 square foot home on Marble Avenue from its former space in nearby Hawthorne.

“We are so happy to open our US headquarters in Pleasantville and we want to thank the Westchester community for the warm welcome,” said Guido Weishaupt, CEO of Zwilling J.A. Henckels, during the ceremonial ribbon cutting.

In addition to airy, modern office space for the company’s 140 employees, the sleek new building includes a high-end kitchen that will serve as a cooking studio for workshops, master classes, and corporate functions. (Continuing the German-Westchester connection, the cooking studio’s cabinetry was done by Mount Kisco-based Leicht Westchester, the county’s only dealer of the high-end German cabinet brand Leicht.)

The building’s 1.2 million cubic feet of warehouse space, chock full of an impressive array of conveyors, racks, picking totes, forklifts, and processing stations, serves as the company’s distribution hub—all Zwilling products sold in the US come through the new space. Through the building’s five shipping doors and three receiving doors, the company is processing some 6,000 pallets at any given time, and ships roughly 4,000 cartons of merchandise a day, to retail chains including Macy’s, Kohl’s, Williams Sonoma, and Target, among others. The company also uses the space to fulfill online orders, and perform value-added services such as ticketing, tagging, and special packaging for some of its largest retail customers.

Zwilling’s new headquarters is also among the first commercial buildings in the region to be designed and built with solar in mind, rather than retrofitted. The company worked with Pleasantville firm Gallin Beeler Design Studio (one of 914INC.’s Small Business Awards winners this year) to design a building that would have a low environmental impact. The 850 kW rooftop solar array, installed by EnterSolar, is expected to offset 100 percent of the company’s grid-supplied power.

The solar aspect of the building was crucial for CEO Weishaupt, who called it “the most important aspect of this project for us.” He added, “By designing this building with significant green elements, we hope to demonstrate our commitment to sustainability not only to our employees and customers, but to our Westchester, New York State, and the greater US community at large.”
