Yorktown Supervisor Matt Slater has announced a new marketing campaign to help develop the town’s “business hamlets” of Crompond, Jefferson Valley, Mohegan Lake, Shrub Oak, and Yorktown Heights, however the marketing push isn’t the only change on the horizon.
Part of the #DestinationY campaign involves adopting new zoning overlays which will allow the above areas, home to many of Yorktown’s shopping and professional centers, to construct new live-play-work areas with an emphasis on diversified housing and new opportunities for economic development.
“The time has come to adapt and be flexible in how we approach our commercial areas, particularly where former uses clearly are no longer economically viable,” says Slater.
Slater points to properties like the Yorktown Green Shopping Center as ripe for rezoning. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down in-store retail for weeks, the shopping center had been underperforming and as shoppers continued to move their spending online, big-box stores like the center’s bygone K-Mart have been shuttering their doors.
“The zoning overlays are crucially important and will serve as templates for town officials, property owners and developers as we work to revitalizing and enhancing our commercial areas,” Slater says. ““Our Director of Planning, John Tegeder, and his staff have done a tremendous job developing the overlays and working with a tight timeframe to enable us to move forward as efficiently as possible.”
The rezoning will place an emphasis on walkable retail/residential neighborhoods, with bike and pedestrian-friendly roadways and linking to the nearby trails, like the North County Trailway that cuts through the heart of Yorktown Heights.
Developers and locals should start seeing digital ads in their feeds and banners throughout the town starting in August.
