A White Plains Hospital Program Exceeds National Quality

The Hospital’s Cardiac Surgery Program, led by renowned New York City surgeon Robert E. Michler, MD, is hitting all of the performance metrics.

White Plains Hospital is on a mission to bring advanced care to residents of Westchester and the surrounding areas. In 2021, the hospital launched the Montefiore Einstein Cardiac Surgery Program at White Plains Hospital, a major initiative that took years to come to realization – making the hospital one of only two in Westchester to provide this life-saving service.

The program has achieved impressive results in its first year under the leadership of Robert E. Michler, MD, Montefiore Health System Surgeon-in-Chief, Chairman, Department of Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery and Department of Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and William A. Jakobleff Jr., MD, Associate Professor, Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery. Both surgeons were recently named to Castle Connolly’s Top Cardiologist list.

“We are bringing renowned New York City cardiac surgeon excellence to Westchester. This unsurpassed level of heart surgery quality is now available close to home,” explains Dr. Michler.

More than 100 open heart surgeries have been performed at White Plains Hospital over the past year, and all of the mended hearts have returned home safely. The operations performed include coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), mitral valve repair and replacement, aortic valve replacement, combined CABG/valve procedures, minimally invasive heart surgery, and aortic aneurysm surgery. The outcomes have been exceptional, with a 30-day survival rate of 100% – far exceeding national quality and performance metrics. In addition, patients have been able to return home far sooner than the national average as a result of the enhanced mobility and early ambulation program implemented by Dr. Michler.

White Plains Hospital recently opened a new state-of-the-art Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (ICU). For patients undergoing cardiac surgery, a Universal Bed Model (UBM) allows patients to remain in the same upscale room, cared for by the same surgical, critical care, and nursing team throughout their hospital stay.

UBM’s innovative care delivery system acknowledges that as the patient’s medical needs become fewer, their level of care is de-escalated by adapting equipment, staff, and other resources according to the patient’s improving acuity level. “Our expedited recovery program resides in an exceptional physical environment which together delivers excellent postoperative outcomes and exceptional patient satisfaction,” Dr. Michler explains.
