Few consumers are aware that only 6% of recyclables actually get recycled, a fact that inspired Refill Room co-owner Heather Ben-Zvi to launch her niche yet timely business in Hastings-on-Hudson in June. “Our mission is to reduce single-use plastic,” explains Ben-Zvi. “The idea is you can bring in any old bottle that you want, or use our bottles that we provide at the store, to fill from large-volume containers of household cleaning products and bath and body products.”
Another pleasant realization for Ben-Zvi was that living more sustainably isn’t as hard or scary as she’d imagined it might be. “This is an easy way to reduce plastic,” she says.
In addition to its refillable products, Refill Room also has a collection of zero-waste and low-waste products available for customers who want to opt out of plastic use entirely. These include soap and shampoo bars, reusable paper towels, and dryer balls, among other products. Ben-Zvi made it clear that the point isn’t to scare people into becoming carbon-neutral overnight. “It’s not meant to be overwhelming; we don’t want to be preachy,” she says. “If you just come and buy our hand soap, and that’s all you use, that’s great.”
If helping the environment and reducing your carbon footprint aren’t sufficient incentives to get you on the Refill Room bandwagon, all of the products sold there benefit the consumer, as well. “It’s very important to us to have products that are not just good for the environment but also good for you,” notes Ben-Zvi. “So, there are no harsh chemicals, and they all meet the standards of the EWG [Environmental Working Group].”
