What does it take to run a world-class medical group? Top doctors and nurses, of course, but also talented lawyers, to oversee everything from contracts and compliance to patient privacy and human resources.
At CareMount Medical (formerly known as Mount Kisco Medical Group) — the largest independent, multi-specialty medical group in New York — that lawyer is Doris Varlese. As CareMount’s general counsel, Varlese is the only in-house attorney at an organization with more than 40 locations, approximately 3,000 employees, and a half-million patients.
Since joining the company in 2012, Varlese has played an integral role in CareMount’s growth. When 100 physicians and several hundred employees from Mid-Hudson Medical Group joined CareMount in 2015, Varlese “worked closely with our management team, employees, and outside law firms to ensure a successful transition,” she explains. “CareMount Medical had not had a transaction this large before, so it was a learning experience for me.”
“I am now leading the effort to provide anti-harassment training for all CareMount Medical physicians and employees.”
And when CareMount changed to its current name in 2016, Varlese worked tirelessly alongside the marketing and clinical teams to ensure a smooth rebranding.
In addition to helping with new initiatives, Varlese also navigates the complex realm of healthcare law. To stay current, the Harvard-trained attorney enrolls in continuing legal education courses, consults with outside law firms, and attends conferences.
So what’s next for Varlese? A key — and timely — initiative: “I am now leading the effort to provide anti-harassment training for all CareMount Medical physicians and employees,” she says.
