Broadview Senior Living at Purchase College joins the metaverse as it uses virtual reality to offer a sneak peek into its community.

The Broadview Senior Living community will allow its 62-year-old-and-above residents to live and grow among the students at SUNY Purchase. The community, which is expected to open this fall, is offering tours of the complex using Oculus VR headsets.

Although the living community is still under construction, that isn’t stopping residents and students from exploring the compound. Broadview is one of the first senior living communities in the nation to use virtual reality in its marketing. It hired SPINE, an award-winning interactive media studio based in Miami, to help its vision quite literally become a reality.

VR technology took off during the pandemic, offering a safe alternative to touring properties. “At a time when people were not getting out, it was a convenient way for our prospective residents to see what we are all about,” says Ashley Wade, Broadview’s Executive Director.

Wade took Red Addis, the Purchase College Student Government President, and Vice President Meghan Moynihan through the virtual community. She highlighted the standout features, including the swimming pool, fitness center, movie theater, spa and salon, dining venues, and onsite health center. This VR tour and visit was filmed by Purchase Senior Toby Nikls and fellow film major Kunga Choephel to be included in their documentary on the intergenerational learning community.

Virtual Reality

The retirement community located on the hip college campus gives its residents access to on-campus happenings. Not only will the residents be able to live among the students, but they will be able to attend performances, lectures, and other events. Broadview’s design hinges on lifelong learning and intergenerational friendships, hence its relationship with the campus. Ninety-five percent of the residence is already reserved. The building will boast 220 living apartments and villas that offer full services including independent living, assisted living, enhanced assisted living, and memory care.

The building is being co-developed by Senior Care Development, LLC and LCS Development, LLC, and will be operated by Life Care Services. LCS manages over 140 senior living communities nationwide and has over 50 years of experience.
