Astara N. Crews

“I like to have a challenge, just to keep my wheels spinning,” says Astara N. Crews. Given her position at ENT and Allergy Associates, LLP, in Tarrytown, Crews — and her wheels — remain in constant motion.

Helping the healthcare company successfully manage audits from federal agencies, insurance companies, and other entities requires constant vigilance on Crews’ part, as ENT and Allergy Associates is one of the nation’s largest otolaryngology and allergy practices, with 44 offices and more than 200 physicians.

The job also requires exquisite tact, especially when it comes to internal matters. “I have to constantly figure out how to tell an organization or individual that they need to correct or change a habit,” Crews shares. “It’s a matter of finesse to convey that and persuade someone to see something differently in a positive way.”

Crews continually seeks to improve her own performance, as well. She began her career as a medical biller in a single practitioner’s office some 20-plus years ago, progressing steadily upward from there. Along the way, she earned a law degree from Loyola University Chicago School of Law.

Having blazed a path, Crews now helps other women across a variety of platforms, including the Women’s Leadership Institute and the American Academy of Professional Coders, for which she spearheaded an innovative mentorship program. “Inequality still exists, even in 2019, and it’s important that we support each other,” she says.
