The long-awaited renovation of Brynwood G & CC gets underway next year with closure of all facilities including the golf course, demolition of the dated clubhouse, and groundbreaking for a new townhome community in Armonk. Architect Rees Jones, known as the “Open Doctor” for his work on US Open venues like Bethpage Black, Baltusrol, and Congressional, will oversee a complete renovation of the existing course, which dates to 1964.
“We are excited to finally begin the next steps in our journey to reinvent the club experience and transform our club into one of the premier golf and country clubs in the Northeast,” says General Manager Josh Lowney. The club received approval from the Town of North Castle for rezoning in June, a process that began in 2009 when Brynwood Partners purchased the property—then known as the Canyon Club—from Japanese conglomerate Mitsubishi. Site plans have been submitted for work to begin in the spring.
All the green complexes, fairways, and bunkers will be regraded and re-turfed in the project and bunkers will be rebuilt. Seven holes will receive major changes to improve playability and conditioning. In the process, the course will be stretched from its current 6,350 yards (par 70) to about 6,700 yards (par 71). The range and short game facility will also be upgraded. If construction approvals are forthcoming in a timely fashion, the new course and a temporary clubhouse should open in the spring of 2017.
For the 2016 season, Brynwood members will receive special membership rates at two local clubs, both also operated by management company Troon Golf. Westchester Hills in White Plains and Centennial GC in Carmel will extend one-year temporary memberships to Brynwood members who want them. Brynwood members will have their own Member/Member, Member/Guest, Match Play Championship, Stroke Play Championship, and Junior Championship at Centennial. Brynwood staff will also organize days of play at other resort and daily fee clubs throughout the country during the 2016 season.
