Bronxville's Blue Moon Mexican Café Spices Things Up

Despite having five locations spread throughout Westchester and New Jersey, Blue Moon Mexican Cafe retains a more upscale atmosphere that larger Mexican franchises lack. The Bronxville location achieves this goal remarkably. With quiet tables, terraced seating, and a hacienda mural backdrop, Blue Moon definitely feels like a local favorite.

“We don’t consider ourselves a chain,” says owner Howie Felixbrod, who opened the original Blue Moon in 1987. “We treat each place like an independent restaurant. Although it’s the same foods, same people, we try to make each place really a neighborhood place as much as we can.”

Blue Moon’s menus cater to both traditionalists and guests seeking a more adventurous take on Mexican cuisine. Their 97-percent scratch-made kitchen offers up classics like skirt steak fajitas with refried beans, and golden, flaky Modelo beer-battered tilapia tacos with slaw, as well as new spins like the Philly Moon cheesesteak burrito, and the “Smokey and the Bearrito” jam-packed with barbecue chicken strips and Gouda. Cauliflower tacos are a new treat for vegetarians, loaded up with sautéed and spiced cauliflower, onions, sweet corn, red peppers, black beans, and a dollop of Blue Moon’s addictive avocado hummus.

The burger menu has also expanded, with the rising star being the “Burger Loco” – a half-pound patty topped with tender pulled pork, fried onion straws, jalapeños, and Blue Moon’s quintessential queso. With a wide array of traditional and craft beers, as well as a top shelf bar featuring exclusively bottled Patron anejo tequila, there’s plenty to pair with your meal.

As for dessert, you can never go wrong with homemade flan or a bag of cinnamon-tossed churros with dipping sauces — but the real standout is the indulgent fried cheesecake chimichanga. Pair any with one of Blue Moon’s long list of international coffees or liqueurs for a delightful cap to any meal, then enjoy the walk home, because this is your new neighborhood place.
