By now, we all know October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month (mission partly accomplished), and national retailers are awash with pink products benefiting breast cancer research and support organizations. Alternatively, you can keep your good intentions, and dollars, closer to home by supporting local stores that are participating with special, limited items or promotions. Shop for a cure at:
Soxfords—The Bedford-based online retailer always makes us smile with their quirky, light-hearted sock designs (from Space Invaders to popsicles). Now offering women’s sizes, too, the company is joining the cause with their cheeky “Hooray for Boobies” style ($20). And 20 percent of each sale goes directly towards supporting breast-cancer research and awareness efforts.
Pam Older Designs—Take 35 percent off non-sale items from the Larchmont-based jewelry line this month; or use code BEST35 to snag the Valentine Earrings at a discount ($48.75) and wear your pink, “a thoughtful way to celebrate a friend who survived breast cancer,” suggests Older. A donation of 10 percent of October sales will go to the Breast Cancer Alliance.
Weezie D.—Stop by the fashion boutique’s all-pink bake sale on Friday, October 17, at the Bronxville location, and help raise funds for the American Cancer Society. On Sunday, October 19, Team Weezie D. will walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event at Manhattanville College, with a breakfast and private sale for team members at the Rye store. Join or donate here.
Love, Leeann—On Thursday, October 23, the recently opened boutique is staying open into the evening and donating 10 percent of the day’s sales towards breast cancer research.
Nordstrom—This one’s a chain, yes, but visiting the White Plains store almost guarantees you’ll walk out with something you’d buy anyway. Our picks from their wide inventory of BCA-driven items: Limited-edition AHAVA Dead Sea Water Mineral Hand Cream, benefitting the National Breast Cancer Foundation, and Bobbi Brown’s Pretty Pink Ribbon Lip Gloss Collection, benefitting the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Plus, we give them kudos for their year-round prosthesis program, through which breast cancer survivors can find in-store, certified fit specialists and expert tailors who will pocket nearly any bra, camisole, or swimsuit, free of charge.
Of course, lots of other brands and stores around the county are taking part in the action, meaning you’ve got a very good reason to get out and shop while there’s still time. Want to get in on the spirit? Find something you love, pick out a special gift for someone close, and/or donate to any of the organizations mentioned here anytime of year.
