For those of us fortunate enough that breast cancer hasn’t touched our everyday lives, it’s likely we’re within a couple of degrees of someone who has battled the disease—even if we don’t know it. And while supporting such a relevant cause is, of course, wonderful, purchasing a pink-packaged lipstick or other such rose-beribboned product can feel a bit futile.
Obviously, there are a ton of institutions, individuals, and private companies with breast cancer patients and survivors at the heart of their work year-round. But rather than hoping the explosion of branded items on shelves this month actually benefits them, why not make a direct donation to one whose efforts really speak to you?
Even better, make a real difference by helping someone who’s gone through cancer feel good. Wee Westchester offers a shortlist of local events where you can do so in person. (You can still make one on the 26th.)
And for those of you with a friend or family member in need of an image boost, remind her how beautiful she is, even through treatment, with these tips from Westchester/Hudson Valley makeup artist Meredith Hayman’s “October Beauty Bulletin”:
Hydrate: It’s super important to stay hydrated especially if you are taking supplements or other medications. Double up your water intake and take time in the morning and evening to apply moisturizer to your face, hands, eyes, and lips.
Brows: Enhancing your brows – even if they are sparse, is not as hard as it seems and can instantly give you a lift and make your eyes look alive.
Lashes/Liner: A little mascara really makes a difference – start application close to the root and roll wand through the ends. If your lashes are too thin for mascara, I recommend enhancing your lash line with soft eyeliner. For best application, start on the outer corner dot the color on where the lashes meet your eyelid. Connect the dots using short strokes – it’s the easiest way to create a line.
Going out for something special – stop by the studio for a quick lash application!
