Group exercise classes are a fun way to get your heart pumping in a community-based atmosphere — and while we’ve taken spin, yoga, and Pilates classes, an elliptical-based class is definitely something new. Old Greenwich’s elliptica studios (1345 E. Putnam Ave, second floor; 203.344.1193) is considered the country’s first elliptical-based boutique fitness studio. Laura Laboissonniere and Clair Mason opened the Old Greenwich location in January (after opening one in Fairfield) as a new low-impact, high-intensity workout with the machine that is considered non-intimidating. Like SoulCycle, light weightlifting is incorporated into sessions, and participants’ calories burned, average miles per hour, power exerted, and distance are tracked and emailed to individuals after the class to show how you rank against others. Taught in a dark space with loud music and led by an energetic instructor, even those who don’t typically like the elliptical can appreciate this exercise class. A play lounge offers childcare while Mom or Dad is in class.
