If you’re going to take an already rich and indulgent meal and cross-pollinate it with another, then it better be executed well. Blockheads, a New York City-based Mexican restaurant chain with a new location in White Plains, succeeds at doing just that with their new Chicken and Waffle Tacos, which deliver a perfect blend of sweet, spicy, and savory.
While it sounds gimmicky, the actual dish impresses while keeping it simple and fresh. Slices of fried chicken, mixed with traditional taco toppings (lettuce, tomato, and corn), are nestled in two soft, thin waffles, which stand in as the “taco shell.” It also comes with a side of warm, jalapeno-infused maple syrup and sweet, dessert-like butternut squash. At $12.95, the two-tacos serving is enough for a small individual meal or makes a solid starter for two to share. Plus, you really only need one of the shells to eat the taco, so you can enjoy the outer layer on its own as a waffle.

We washed ours down with their new Tequila Bowlarama cocktail. Created as a perfect summer selection, this shareable drink combines tequila, Champagne, Devotion vodka, fresh fruit, a large helping of a frozen margarita, and a small beer. And while not presented in one of those gigantic fish bowls you’ll see at other bars, it’s still large enough to justify its $18 price and strong enough to give you a little buzz—a larger one if you decide to tackle it yourself (probably not a great idea).
Blockheads’ margaritas and classic tacos are always a sure bet, but the chicken-and-waffle taco/Bowlarama pairing proves that their specialty items are definitely worth a taste.
