Back when the photo-filtering app was still a digital-age novelty, a friend of mine rolled her eyes at early adopters obsessed with what she dubbed, “Insta-Pretty Tan-Gram.” Now that most everyone’s caught up on the appearance-boosting powers of the ubiquitous social stream, we’re all eyeing those super-skinny selfies and color-saturated kissy faces with similar skepticism.
On the other hand, the platform is a perfect visual feed for the beauty field, presenting pro demos, product previews, and inspirations through, yes, the poster’s chosen filters—or lack thereof. Staged makeup-scapes or no, here are some of my favorite beauty-related Instaccounts in the County.
1. Plush Salon
When it comes to cool hair-color inspo, White Plains’ @plush_salon surprises followers with pics of everything from traditional brunette-to-blond ombré created in-house to awesome artificial hues, like red velvet and electrifying graded violet.
2. Indie Lee
Not only does South Salem’s @indie_lee make eco-friendly beauty products featured by some of the industry’s biggest outlets, but her ’grams are bright, romantic, and simply gorgeous—plus, she often answers follower skincare Qs in the comments.
3. Blake Lively
Bedford-resident and drop-dead stunner @blakelivelyrey turns her more than 400K followers green daily with her impossibly shiny Rapunzel locks and fresh-faced, camera-ready makeup, always approachable enough to emulate on a regular day in the neighborhood (even hers).
4. Blow & Beyond
I’m constantly trying to recreate the glam-milkmaid waterfall braids and soft, cascading curls snapped by the stylists at Bronxville’s @blowandbeyond, but the girly, positive-outlook quotes shared by the blow-out bar’s media handlers garner just as many of my double taps.
5. Benefit
Big brand @benefitcosmetics, located in Rye, masters the art of covetable-cosmetics marketing with giveaways, tutorials, eye-popping prop styling, sassy witticisms (in perfectly on-brand type designs), as well as the latest on new product launches and most-loved favorites.
