Fran Hauser begins the next chapter of her story with the opening of Bedford Books. Not only is opening a cozy bookstore a lifelong passion for Hauser, but it marks the town’s first-ever bookstore. Bedford Books will open its doors on December 12 with a lineup of celebrations including holiday shopping, free gift wrapping, hot cocoa from Mast Market, and cookies from 351 Bakery. In the evening, visitors can celebrate with a glass of wine in hand and treats from Graze New York.
Hauser grew up in Mount Kisco and has lived in Bedford with her family for the past 25 years. The local is a bestselling author with three published books, a keynote speaker, leadership expert, and LinkedIn Top Voice. While proving successful in her own publishing journey, Hauser founded Bookbound, an online platform designed to help launch nonfiction authors. Additionally, she’s the co-host of the Bookbound podcast, where she dishes out advice for aspiring nonfiction writers on transforming their ideas, expertise, and obsessions into books.
While Hauser has spoken to over 200 organizations, including the likes of Google, Meta, and NPR, and is a former Fortune 500 executive and active startup investor, her recent venture falls a bit closer to home. With the opening of Bedford Books, she hopes the space will become a hub for locals to gain inspiration, learn something new, and connect with each other.
“Community is incredibly important to me, and I knew a bookstore would be something our community would warmly welcome,” Hauser notes. She’s delighted to be part of the first-ever bookstore in Bedford, adding, “I feel like every town should have a bookstore, as it serves as a cultural and social hub, fostering a love for reading and providing a space for people to connect.”
When the space became available at 13 Court Road, Hauser knew it was the right time to pursue her lifelong dream, or else she would regret it. As an author, she’s visited and talked at many bookstores around the country and notes that she pulled inspiration for Bedford Books from those experiences. One bookstore that sticks out for her is Northshire Bookstore in Manchester, Vermont. The sense of warmth and charm is essential in creating a cozy bookstore, and these elements were thoughtfully incorporated into Hauser’s design.
“There are lovely nooks for delving into your favorite read or exploring a new genre,” Hauser describes the layout of Bedford Books. Notable design elements include a massive “B” for Bedford, that’s proudly displayed upon entrance, and a wrap-around counter stocked with gift ideas.
“There are special touches throughout the store, and I can’t wait for people to come and experience it,” adds Hauser.
Bedford Books offers literature for every reader, including children’s and YA selections. The children’s section boasts comfy floor cushions for kids to sit on as they explore. To pay homage to a special community in Hauser’s heart, there’s a section in the store dedicated to local authors and female artists, thanks to the store’s collaboration with Yellow Studio.
“I’m friends with many people in the literary world here, and it’s wonderful to be able to support each other. It’s very important for me to spotlight their work and host them at Bedford Books,” says Hauser.
In the new year, book lovers can expect a variety of events including salon series, author talks, meet-and-greets, and more. Be sure to stop by on Thursday, December 12 to celebrate the opening of Bedford’s first bookstore!
“The bookstore really is my happy place, and I want it to be that for others, too. I’m overwhelmed by the positive response so far and look forward to the store becoming a beloved part of Bedford for many years to come,” says Hauser.
