After living in their Harrison home for more than 20 years, this couple decided it was time to renovate their office/family-room combo. They brought in designer Tara Kantor to breathe new life into the 15’x13’ space.
They charged her with creating something dark, smoky, and cozy chic to function not only as an office but also a place the couple could enjoy by themselves or with friends.
The jumping-off point was a picture of an office with high-gloss charcoal gray walls. Kantor melded both masculine and feminine elements to marry the husband’s and wife’s styles and create a spot they both could enjoy. “It is more than an office,” she says. “It is a place where the couple can come at the end of the night and have a drink and watch television, and a place where family and friends gather. Because of this, the sofa needed to be cozy and inviting yet reflect the sleek look of the room.”
To achieve that goal, Kantor had ModShop make a custom sofa. She requested a Dacron filling for softness and a soft Pollack|Weitzner mohair fabric to complete the look.
The original room had green paneled built-ins, which Kantor initially wanted to repurpose. However, they needed to be removed. In their place, Kantor created new built-ins that are current yet classic and hold a large TV.
On the walls is a textured wallpaper. “We chose a dark and smoky textured raffia paper from Innovations,” says Kantor. “It was the perfect shade of charcoal to complement the trim.”
Even though the room is dark in color, it has amazing light, thanks to a large window and the addition of extra lighting, as well as bright artwork. “The room gets a lot of sunlight during the day, and unlined shades were used so that the room could be a mix of light and dark when needed,” says Kantor. “The couple are [art] collectors who love to go to galleries on the weekends. All the pieces are from Weber Gallery.
“My favorite part of the room is how the textures are so rich and layered,” adds Kantor. “The homeowners feel the same way!”
