There’re two things a bed and breakfast needs tonail to wow us and they are the bed andbreakfast. Not only does the Olde Rhinebeck Inn hit it out of the park on both counts, but its proximity to local shopping and outdoor adventure — not to mention its proximity to Westchester — makes it one of our favorite weekend getaways. With fall foliage soon to arrive, we can’t think of a better time for you to book a stay at this quaint and historic local retreat.
Originally builtas a farmhouse circa 1745 — yes, it’s older than the country — the inn features beautiful hardwood and sturdy, rustic architecture sitting on its own little tuft of tree-ringed, pond-adjacent field. For a quarter mile or so in either direction the inns only neighbors are working farms, and its only other visitors (besides you) arethe occasional curious horse.
Farther afield you’ll find plenty of historic estates like the Queen Anne and Vanderbilt mansions, as well as breathtakingly scenic hikes like Staatsburgh’s Hopeland trails and all the quaint boutiques and indie-owned shopping of downtown Rhinebeck.
Rooms themselves are a careful balance of old and new: large beds decked out with vintage quilts and plush pillows are delightfully comfortable, paired with antique furniture, yes, but also tucked away flat screen TVs and Roku streaming boxes, in case you want to enjoy some local news or Netflix a quick movie before bed. Bathrooms mix classic design with more modern amenities like water jet tubs and inn-branded bath products.
Other suite options include private balconies or porches, fireplace, or king canopy bed, depending on room choice. All guests will be welcomed by fresh fruit and juice, and little assorted chocolates or cookies and a lovely handwritten card. Postcards to send to friends and a quill pen (don’t worry, it’s a ballpoint!) are also on-hand, and guests have access to the inn’s grounds and sitting room throughout their stay.
The big draw, however, is certainlythe food. Innkeepers and best friends Jonna Paolella and Cindy Curnan put a real emphasis on fresh, local, and whenever possible organic ingredients prepared family-style for the inn’s guests. Come in-season and your eggs might come from the inn’s very own chickens! Conversation and pleasantries flow easily over coffee, tea, or fresh blended juice and a multi-course menu — with a few of the inn’s favorite recipes online.
Standbys include the inn’s famous baked French pear pancake with raspberries, butternut squash-kale-caramelized leak frittatas or herb-baked eggs in individual ramekins, and Swiss alpine muesli soaked in apple cider. Sides range from pan-friend chicken sausage and curry roasted cauliflower to country spiced potatoes and rhubarb crumble.
