Skincare experts are fired up about red light therapy, a treatment that uses low-level wavelengths of light to treat common skin issues. Clinics and spas have started to introduce this therapy into their services—exposing the target areas to a lamp that sends an infrared light deep into the skin’s cells. The red light stimulates mitochondria production, which provides a slew of benefits: including reversing the appearance of aging and boosting hair growth. The treatment is quick, painless, and non-invasive, and often preferred over laser therapy since it is not produced by heat.
“Red light therapy helps to stimulate collagen and rejuvenate the skin without causing thermal damage,” says Dr. Kseniya Kobets, Director of Cosmetic Dermatology at Montefiore Einstein Advanced Care Westchester. “It can also be used to stimulate the scalp and hair follicles to address thinning hair concerns.”
Since professional treatments can be pricey—up to $200 per session—recurring visits to heal chronic conditions like rosacea add up fast. But, says Dr. Kobets, you can get the benefits using good quality at-home products. She recommends these two FDA-approved brands:
Hairmax Products

For those suffering from hair loss, Hairmax’s comb and band products may help. Hairmax’s Actonis 18 Dual Action Laser Comb encourages growth with each 8-minute combing session. For the best results, use the comb once a week for six months. The LaserBand 82 ComfortFlex, is a hands-free option that covers your whole head. The company recommends wearing the band for 90 seconds once a week, for three weeks, to see results. “Combs and bands are more efficient at contacting the scalp because they move hair out of the way, ensuring more energy is being delivered,” says Dr. Kobets. $400-$700
Omnilux Devices

Dr. Kobets also recommends Omnilux’s face mask, neck, and chest devices for those looking to firm and rejuvenate their skin. They can treat hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, and reduce redness. Their bestseller, the Contour face mask, is designed to boost collagen production. For the best results, wear the mask 10 minutes a day, three times a week, for four to six weeks. $395
Note: Check with your dermatologist before trying red light therapy or any at-home skin treatment.
