Organic and Natural Beauty Products from Westchester Entrepreneurs

Back to Basics

Worried about the talc and toxins contained in commercial baby skincare products, South Salem resident Indie Lee started making her own organic skincare products for her sister, who was then expecting her first child. The worry became even more personal when Lee was diagnosed with a brain tumor, which she believed was caused, in part, by environmental toxins. After her successful surgery, she expanded her line to include a facial serum, body scrubs, cleansing bars, moisturizing oils and balms, and shampoo and conditioner

“The skin is our largest organ, and it absorbs a significant amount of environmental elements, including toxins and harmful chemicals,” Lee says. “Our goal is to provide all-natural beauty products that cleanse, nourish, heal, and hydrate the skin.” Prices range from $6 for a cleansing bar to $89 for the facial serum (made from “the stem cells of a rare Swiss apple”). Products are available at spas and salons throughout Westchester. Visit indielee.com for locations near you.

Baby Boomer

Yonkers resident Cindy Joseph, a model and former makeup artist, has just added a skin cream to her Boom! by Cindy Joseph makeup line. “Boomsilk is handmade in Hawaii with pure, organic virgin olive oil, beeswax, propolis, pollen, honey, and vitamin E,” says Joseph. No need for three moisturizers: use it around your eyes, on your face and neck, and just keep on going wherever your skin could use a little love. We like simple; $32 for 4 oz at the Silk Road in Bronxville or boombycindyjoseph.com.

Cranberry Smoothie

This new three-step cranberry scrub/peel/massage body treatment will leave your skin softer and silkier than a baby’s behind. Richard Scott Salon and Day Spa (15-17 S Moger Ave, Mount Kisco 914-242-1700; richardscottsalon.com) and Westchester-based Crater Lake Company in Peekskill joined forces to create this decadent new spa experience using three of Crater Lake’s cranberry-based products. Step 1: Esthetician Carmela Carfagno sloughs off dead, dry skin with Crater Lake’s body polish. Step 2: She applies the peel and wraps you in a Mylar cocoon for five minutes. While you’re “cooking,” she offers a mini facial or scalp massage. Step 3: She massages Cranberry Sparkle Flutter Butter all over your now super-smooth skin. Bonus: settle back in the relaxation room with a steaming cup of tea and a cranberry muffin and marvel at how your skin feels ($130 for a 90-minute treatment).
