Calling all bookworms! Here’s your guide to local bookstores in Westchester County where you can browse, read, and talk books.

Fall is the perfect time of year to snuggle up with a good book (and perhaps some hot cocoa). Luckily, Westchester has a handful of unique independent bookstores stocked with every genre you can imagine. Browse these cozy shops for a must-read classic or grab the latest best-seller and be careful not to get lost in the pages.

The Village Bookstore

This family-owned bookstore features hand-selected books, cards, journals, and other miscellaneous gifts. The shelves hold over 10,000 books, including genres like history, poetry, cooking, and so much more. The shop also supports the community by featuring local authors.

Transom Bookshop

23 Main St, Tarrytown; 914.848.4332

Main Street in Tarrytown is stocked with local goods, delicious eats, and gems like Transom Bookshop. The owner, Chris Steib, shares on his website that the bookshop was planned, designed, and renovated over the span of five months in mid-2021. It’s apparent that Stein poured his love for reading, learning, and words into his store to share with his customers.

Bronx River Books

Scattered Books

Scattered Books is located within an antique house in Chappaqua. The store is a family-owned and -operated business that offers a variety of books for both adults and children as well as gifts and author signings.

Bruised Apple

Take a step back in time and browse Bruised Apple’s impressive collection of old-school reads. The shop has been buying, selling, and trading used, out of print, and rare books since 1993.

Galápagos Books

This independent, family-owned bookstore has been running since 1987, and the owner, Amada Abad, has been with the store since the start. The store offers a range of genres, including foreign language books, bestsellers, and teen novels.

Hudson Valley Books for Humanity

The bookstores owner Amy got the idea for her store when she was going through old family bookcases. She believed those books could be given a second life. Amy puts the voices of women, People of Color, and other marginalized communities right at the front. The store also holds kids readings, music events, yoga classes, and other events.
