Garde Robe Is the Ultimate Cyber-Closet for Your Most Treasured Looks

Founded by a Chappaqua resident, the luxury garment storage company protects off-season pieces and special occasion looks alike.

It’s been 20 years since Stockholm native and Chappaqua resident Adam Gilvar’s Garde Robe broke into the luxury garment storage industry, and it’s been 25 years since we first saw Cher Horowitz in Clueless casually browse her computerized wardrobe and thought, “I need that!”

“It’s amazing how many people recall that specific scene,” the president and CEO says. Though at the time it seemed like a futuristic concept, Garde Robe offers a similar service shown in the 1995 movie. And “the reality,” Gilvar adds, “is that Garde Robe is so much more.”

The service goes lightyears beyond any run-of-the-mill storage operation for your wedding dress or off-season articles.

“Garde Robe’s service is all about the combination of proper garment care, accessibility, and an extremely high level of service and response,” Gilvar says. Each garment or accessory consigned to the service is meticulously inspected, photographed, documented, and catalogued by archivists, sent for cleaning or repaired as necessary, and then stored in a dedicated climate-controlled facility with archival-grade supplies.

Every item is then made available to clients digitally through the company’s signature Cyber Closet iPad app — which allows users to view their own collections by designer, category, color, season, size, and more, just as if they were shopping online.

The best part? Unlike traditional storage services, Garde Robe can pull individual items and then hand deliver them anywhere in NYC or Los Angeles same day. (Up to ten of them for free!) Heading somewhere a bit more exotic? Pieces can be shipped anywhere in the world with valet service and be waiting for you when you arrive. Summer home in the Hamptons? Loungewear and cocktail dresses already in your closet. Milan? Your runway-ready gown is already at your hotel. Consider us totally bugging.

Adam Gilvar, President and CEO

“After 20 years, Garde Robe has become synonymous with this singular service, which combines proper garment care with a digital portal, allowing for on-demand delivery in a ready-to-wear condition,” Gilvar says. While this might be a service retained by Westchester’s more affluent fashionistas, the company also started offering a new service this past year: single item storage.

“In normal times, Garde Robe is utilized by New Yorkers with inadequate closet space for off-season wardrobe storage, as well as infrequently worn evening wear. Many brides store their wedding attire, but in most cases after the wedding.” Starting last year, many brides-to-be approached Garde Robe to store gowns they wanted to preserve until their nuptials, as temporarily shuttered venues postponed thousands of weddings. Normally, the service wouldn’t accept only a single item from a customer, but the Garde Robe team began offering the service as a courtesy and has continued the practice into 2021.

“How could we say no?” Gilvar says. “It is just so unfortunate and sad that so many brides and grooms needed to delay their special day. Of course we are allowing them to archive their dresses.”
