Joining the Jefferson Valley Mall’s roster of new food offerings, Bear Mountain Coffee Roasters opened its first café at the end of 2018.
“We’re aiming to be a neighborhood coffee shop,” says Lisa Baratz, who owns the company with her husband, Jonathan, adding there are no “quality coffee shops in the area.” The Baratzes had been looking for sites for a café since they saw the great response their products received at area farmers’ markets.
Bear Mountain has been a wholesale coffee roaster for 13 years and branched out into tea six years ago, with its Wicked Good Tea. Their beans are certified-organic and fair-trade. The café sells all manners of coffee beverages, including cold-brew and nitrogen-infused coffees, plus mixed iced tea drinks and a selection of cocoas. Coffee beans and teas are for sale, and the selections change seasonally.
Baked goods at the café come from the Tristate area, and Jonathan says the main focus is on Westchester and Putnam suppliers. “We have alliances with micro-bakeries,” he says. There’s a dedicated nut-free case, a Belgian-waffle bar, and a light breakfast-and-lunch menu.
Jonathan says as the mall offers more community-based activities, the café will be doing the same. “We want customers to come in and feel comfortable here, whether they’re stopping for a morning coffee or coming in after dinner for a pastry and espresso.”
