After days of relentless rain and just as summer is officially set to begin, eager Westchester beachgoers have been met with unexpected news. In a recent statement from the office of the county executive on June 11, the Westchester County Health Department has announced the temporary closure of Westchester County beaches due to excessive rainfall and harmful algae. Health department officials announced that Westchester received 0.59 inches of rainfall, which can cause possible sewer runoff, as of June 11. The following beaches are closed for the time being:
- Rye: Coveleigh Club
- Mamaroneck: Harbor Island, Beach Point Club, Orienta Beach Club, and Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club
- New Rochelle: Hudson Park Beach, Davenport Club, Greentree Club, and Surf Club
- Mohegan Lake: Mohegan Colony Association and Mohegan Park District
According to the county, beach closures depend on the number of inches of rain on the watershed. Heavy rain and discharge from heavy rain can directly affect the water, which can contain high levels of harmful bacteria and may cause illness. On June 20, the county announced that recent water samples collected on June 16 and June 18 from Harbor Island Beach in Mamaroneck and Hudson Park East Beach in New Rochelle tested positive for bacteria.
“The decision to close these beaches is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and health of the public. Harmful algae blooms are more prevalent during hot days when water temperatures rise, leading to increased bacteriological growth rates,” says Westchester County health commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler.
Next Steps
While the abovementioned beaches are closed to the public for the time being, the algae must be completely removed from the swim area and the water must be tested. Water samples will be taken and submitted for analysis to determine if and when the areas are safe for public access. The county will provide an update if and when the swim areas are once again open to locals. To stay up to date on reopening dates and schedules, visit westchestergov.com.
