If sailing floats your boat, head to perennial New England hotspot Newport, RI, this month — the only North American host city for the Volvo Ocean Race, the world’s most prestigious offshore racing event. Now roughly three-quarters of the way through the 45,000-nautical-mile race, teams have been on the water since October, stopping at host cities in Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania, and South America. Starting May 8, Newport will host team bases, exhibits, and events — most notably, the in-port race on May 19 — before launching the next leg of the race to Cardiff, Wales.
