After the turkey, yams, stuffing, etc. are consumed on Thanksgiving, guests turn their eyes and mouths to the dessert offerings – or more specifically pies. And this year Westchester residents have not one but two locations where they can buy Baked by Susan signature pies, as well as other desserts. Winner of a number of Best of Westchester awards, the bakery is now also in Tarrytown with a pop-up shop in addition to their Croton-on-Hudson location.
Sharing space with Eatarry “provided us with the perfect opportunity,” says Susan O’Keefe, Baked by Susan’s owner. Baked by Susan has been in Croton-on-Hudson for seven years, and O’Keefe says she and her family — her husband and three sons are all involved in the business — found themselves asking what they were going to do next.
“Tarrytown is a great little town,” O’Keefe enthuses. The pop-up space has five tables inside and counter seating for four, plus outdoor seating. “We complement the food that Eatarry serves,” O’Keefe says. “They have breakfast sandwiches and omelets, and we serve muffins, cookies, cakes, and of course our pies.”
The range of pies include classics such as apple and pecan, and tart cherry or sweet potato praline. “And our customers won’t let us not make pumpkin pie.” Beyond pies, other Thanksgiving offerings range from dinner rolls to donuts and a variety of cakes.
“The pace between Halloween and the end of the year is full-speed ahead for us,” O’Keefe says. Moving toward Christmas and Hanukkah, Baked by Susan prepares such goodies as cookie platters, Bûche de Noël, and rugelach. There are even custom-made gingerbread houses and gifts such as pancake and hot chocolate mixes.
The shop is open at 25 Main Street through the end of the year, Wednesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Holiday orders can be placed at the Croton-on-Hudson store at 914.862.0874 or at bakedbysusan.com. While Thanksgiving special orders no longer can be placed as of November 15, other items from the menu will be available through the 19th.
