Aspiring Sports Broadcasters Learn From the Pros at Bruce Beck Camp

Is a teenager in your household a budding Dan Hicks or Jim Nantz? Do you hear them in their room practicing their introduction to the Masters telecast or trading barbs with Johnny Miller and David Feherty?  Every teen needs a dream, don’t they?!

Sports broadcasting is a tough field to break in to, but they can get a leg up at the Bruce Beck Sports Broadcasting Camp this summer in New Rochelle. The Emmy-winning NBC 4 Sports Anchor hosts the camp himself and calls on a long list of his professional friends in the business to meet with youngsters 13+ to give them insights into the fascinating career opportunities.

“For me, it is wonderful to watch kids grow,” Beck says. “They can take their skills to college and hopefully become professionals in this competitive and exciting industry.”

Beck, who has won nine Emmys and was named New York Sportscaster of the Year eight times by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association, operated the camp for 15 years in New Jersey and is excited to bring it to its new home at Steiner Sports in New Rochelle. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 24 through 28.

“It’s a great opportunity to learn the nuances of sports broadcasting from the best announcers in New York,” Beck says. “It gives kids a head start in the industry and is interactive so campers gets hands-on experience.

A partial list of guest lecturers includes Jimmy Roberts of NBC Sports, Kenny Albert and Sam Rosen, MSG and Fox; Tina Cervasio, Fox 5 NY; Marc Malusis, WFAN Radio; and Scott Braun, MLB Network.

In addition to meeting and interacting with the personalities, campers will practice and learn the ins and outs of play-by-play, anchoring, hosting, and interviewing, sideline reporting, and sports talk radio. Tuition at the week-long camp is $995.
