Billing itself as “the modern way to work together,” a website launched by Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz offers a project-management system for small businesses. Best of all, if your company has fewer than 30 employees, it’s free.
At its most basic level, Asana (asana.com) can be a simple to-do list, with “Today,” “Upcoming,” and “Later” categories for tasks. Businesses also can use Asana to create, manage, and assign tasks to its staffers for a project of any size—and facilitate ongoing communication about them. Tasks can be enumerated and prioritized. These can be assigned to co-workers, commented on, and tagged. Notes and due dates also can be added, and relevant files uploaded to every task.
Asana can be used as the homepage at work, as it presents the info you need to keep on top of what is happening around the office. Your tasks are prominently displayed on the front page, and you also can check on the status of any task available to you (each one has a real-time Facebook-esque newsfeed, which details what and when work has been completed). The website has many keyboard shortcuts and can be accessed from anywhere via your mobile device.
For businesses with 30 or more people Asana charges a flat monthly fee, starting at $100.
