Armonk’s Whippoorwill Club Among Top 100 Classic Courses

Golfweek chooses the recently-renovated course as one of the country’s best.

Whippoorwill Club has returned to Golfweek’s Top 100 Classic Courses in the USA at number 92, thanks to a multi-year renovation project overseen by architect Tripp Davis and Associates. The course was originally laid out by Donald Ross, but was completely re-designed by Charles Banks in 1928. It features numerous challenging holes with the dramatic bunkering and green contours that are the hallmarks of his work. With a course rating of 72.7 and slope of 142, Whippoorwill’s classic course is a tough test of golf.

“We are proud to have been instrumental in helping Whippoorwill return to the Golfweek list at #92,” said architect Davis. “We restored select greens to their original size by expanding them.  We also renovated the bunkers and tees in order to return the look and playability of the course to its original style.  It was important to recapture the original size and shape of greens, and restore native grass areas that once were predominant on the course.”

Davis and his team are known for their historic renovations of classic courses like New Jersey’s Spring Lake Golf Club and Rumson Country Club, Engineers Country Club in Roslyn Harbor, Deepdale Club in Manhasset, Burning Tree in Greenwich, and Rolling Hills in Wilton, CT.
