When holiday shopping, are there any words as sweet as “two-for-one”? This holiday season, Ann Taylor—which has local stores in White Plains, Mt. Kisco, and Larchmont—is offering something that’ll cross two items off your list: buying presents, and charitable giving. That’s because, on November 11, the chain is offering a limited-edition jewelry collection where 50 percent of the purchase price benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Available in stores and online, the collection includes a necklace, pendant, bracelet, and ring set, all adorned with an elephant charm ($39.50 – $49.50). There are many reasons why the elephant was the animal of choice for the collection. Elephants are believed to be good luck (always appreciated when dealing with illness), and they also live in families (and families are so important to St. Jude). And, of course, elephants live for a long, long time. Not so into elephants? You can also donate directly to St. Jude’s.
If you’ve every seen one of those heartstring-tugging commercials in the movie theater, you already know what a good cause St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is. If you need reminding, the hospital is the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children. Not only that, it doesn’t bill families for treatment, travel, housing, or food. And those treatments work: the hospital is currently working to drive the overall survival rate for childhood cancer to 90 percent in the next decade.
So the jewelry, we can admit, is just a trinket. The real gift goes to someone you don’t see: A family helping a child get through his or her cancer treatments during the holidays.
