What’s to like?
Sometimes pursuing a vision can test your resolve, but the prize at the end is more than worth it, and the results can be simply spectacular. Such was the experience of the owner of this unique, spacious Armonk home that’s anything but ordinary. After first setting eyes on the property’s original 1932 Adirondack-style cabin, distinguished by its wavy-edge wood siding (known as brainstorming) and including a small post-World War II extension, he couldn’t turn away and launched an ambitious renovation adventure, creatively solving innumerable design challenges along the way.
For example, when a match for the cabin’s thick pine couldn’t be delivered dried and seasoned, he had a comparable red cedar shipped from British Columbia. Similarly, his answer to replicating the distinctive original steel casement windows with period hardware was installing updated energy-efficient windows in the same style. The finished product: a uniquely reimagined retreat that blends the best of Adirondack and Mission styles with high-end modern amenities and solidly built (with all-mahogany interior doors) the way it would have been in the 1930s.
An added benefit: the private haven feel is extended outdoors thanks to the Whippoorwill Golf Club that borders the more-than-2-acre grounds.
“When you’re inside the house, no matter where you’re standing, there’s always something interesting to draw your eye,” says the homeowner. “There’s not a single view that’s unattractive.”
