Alapure Cosmetics’ Jill Riley.

Jill Riley’s cosmetics company may be based in White Plains, but she had to travel 8,000 miles to South Africa to find the inspiration for her line, Alapure Cosmetics. It was there that she discovered marula oil, made from the ripened fruit of the marula tree.
“I’ve always loved traveling to exotic places to experience different cultures, meet interesting people, and discover their beauty secrets,” Riley said.
According to Alapure, “The oil has been used by African women for thousands of years to keep their skin soft and young looking. Marula oil is easily absorbed into the skin and has antioxidant, anti-aging properties, and is also used to diminish the appearance of scars. It is protein-rich and contains lots of fatty acids.” Alapure’s cosmetics are all paraben-free and are not tested on animals. The company is also committed to sustainable production practices—all of the marula oil is hand-harvested and fair-trade.
The line includes enriched marula oil, as well as body lotion, body butter, and botanical soap. It can be found at a few major department stores, or else you can buy it through the website. (Protip for bargain hunters: You can also request a free sample through the website.)
